A Little Garden Can Do a Lot of Good
A corner of your yard may not seem like much. But when you swap turf, thirsty ornamentals, or bare soil for native plants, you’re not just making your yard prettier, you’re creating a gathering place where life can flourish.
Want chickadees, hummingbirds, and cedar waxwings in your garden? Start with plants. Native plants provide nectar, seeds, and other food for birds—but they also support the insects that make the whole system work. Caterpillars and other tiny creatures are especially important food for many birds and their young.
Your Little Patch of Habitat Can…
- Feed the pollinators with native nectar and pollen.
- Help feed baby birds by supporting the insects their parents need to find.
- Make room for wildlife to hide, nest, feed, and hang out.
- Put roots to work improving soil, soaking up rain, and reducing runoff.
- Need less water than turf and many ornamental plants (once established).
And you don’t need a huge yard – or a huge budget – to make a difference. You just need a patch of ground and a plan.
Fall Is a Really Good Time to Plant.
Spring gets all the gardening hype. Seed catalogues! Nursery visits! The sudden urge to buy twelve tomato plants!
But fall is also a great time!
The air is cooler, the soil is still warm, and the Pacific Northwest starts doing that thing it does best: raining.
And while the things you plant may go dormant and look plain during fall and winter, your future self will thank you when spring turns a corner.
We're People Who Like Plants. And People.
We’re a woman-owned, queer-owned garden company obsessed with native plants, ecological relationships, and making beautiful landscapes widely accessible. We believe good gardens should do more than look nice. They should be full of life—and help support it.
Frequently Asked
What exactly is a Garden Kit?
A whole garden, thoughtfully designed and packaged up for you. You get the plants, a planting plan, plant information, and a getting-started guide so you know what goes where and how to care for it.
Are all the plants native?
Yes. All of the plants in our Garden Kits are native to western Washington, and most are native to the Puget Sound Lowland ecoregion—the place we call home. We select them for their ecological value, growing conditions, and ability to grow well together.
Which Garden Kit is right for my yard?
Start with three things: space, sun, and moisture.
Our Small Space kit covers around 100 square feet of full sun. The Go Big kit is good for about 200 square feet of full-sun garden. And Go With the Flow, our most versatile kit works in a wider range of sun and moisture conditions—including rain gardens.
Check the individual kit details to find the best match for your space.
I'm new to gardening. Can I really plant this myself?
Yes! These gardens are designed for DIY planting. Your plants are labeled, your planting plan shows you where everything goes, and your getting-started guide walks you through site preparation, planting, watering, and ongoing care.
No advanced plant knowledge required. And you can always contact us for help!
What if my soil isn't great?
Don’t panic. Your getting-started guide covers site and soil preparation, and you don’t need to create a botanical spa before planting.
The most important thing is matching the right plants to the right conditions. We’re happy to walk you through this process if you have questions once you get started.
What happens after I place my order?
Contact us at info@shootingstargardens.com to arrange pick up or delivery (for a fee). All kits must be picked up / delivered by November 8th.
Do I need a truck to get my Garden Kit home?
Nope! Every Garden Kit will fit in the back seat of a car.
Depending on the kit, you’ll have one to three nursery flats, a package of bulbs and bare-root plants, and maybe a few one-gallon pots. No truck—or creative plant Tetris—required.
How will my plants be packaged?
We’ve designed the kits to pack a lot of plants into surprisingly little space.
Most plants will come bare-root, wrapped in moist sawdust and butcher paper. Bare-root plants help us keep costs low and minimize environmental impact.
About 40% of the plants in each kit will come in 4-inch recycled pots, and depending on the kit, a few may come in one-gallon pots. Bulbs will be packaged with the bare roots.
When should I plant my Garden Kit?
As soon as possible. Bare-root plants need to get back into the ground quickly, so plan to plant your garden within two days of pickup or delivery.
Can’t plant that soon? Keep the bare-root plants wrapped and in a cool, dark place until you’re ready. Follow the storage instructions included with your kit to keep everything happy in the meantime.
When will I see blooms?
Some plants may bloom in their first year, but perennials need time to get established and won’t look like a mature garden right away.
That’s why we include native annual seeds for some first-year color and pollinator food while the perennials settle in. Think of them as the first course while the perennials get their roots together.
Your box includes a packet of native annual seeds to sprinkle into the garden for extra flowers and habitat while your perennials settle in. They’ll give you some first-year color and provide food for pollinators while the long-term garden gets established.
Think of it as the opening act while the perennials get their roots together.
Checkout the bloom calendar for each of our kits:
Will I need to add mulch?
We recommend woodchips, wood shavings, or other organic matter to help preserve moisture in the soil and inhibit weeds. However, you’ll want to leave a well-weeded space bare (no mulch) for the annual seed mix.
How much maintenance will my garden need?
Native doesn’t mean no-maintenance. Your garden will need watering and weeding during the first summer, while plants continue to get established. You’ll want to read the planting care instructions carefully, but at a minimum, expect to water at least once a week, likely more, during the hot dry summer.
Once established, many native plants need less supplemental water and fuss than turf and many traditional ornamental plantings.
What if I have questions after I plant?
Ask us! Gardening is rarely a one-and-done transaction, and we’re happy to help while your garden gets established.
We’d much rather answer a question than have you stare at a wilting plant from the kitchen window and hope it sorts itself out.
